Depending on the age of your child, we will typically administer either: the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence® – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children® – Fifth Edition (WISC-V).
The WPPSI-IV is an innovative measure of cognitive development for preschoolers and young children, rooted in contemporary theory and research. The WISC-V is an intelligence test that measures a child’s intellectual ability and 5 cognitive domains that impact performance.
We can utilize the following alternative cognition measures based on your specific needs:
The “Basic” version of the either the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V includes the testing required outlined in the admissions requirements of most schools in the area.
The “Full” version of the applicable test includes the optional subtests you can elect for us to administer. The information yielded by the additional subtests is for the family only, and is not considered in the admissions process. This typically shows additional information, including strengths, about your child’s cognitive abilities.
Families will automatically receive a copy of the final report. No other individual/third party will gain access to the report without your written consent.
Within the forms completed during the registration process, you will see a form titled: “Consent to Release Report”. This form provides consent for TPES to distribute a copy of your child’s report to the listed individuals—this includes and is not limited to: Pediatrician/Primary care provider, school counselor, therapist or other mental health professional, admissions staff, and others.
Typically, we conduct testing in the morning, after a good night’s rest and after the child has eaten breakfast when they can perform their best. Both morning and afternoon appointments are offered based on availability.
You can navigate to the calendar within the booking page to view our up-to-date availability for testing. For accommodating specific scheduling requests, please reach out to info@turningpointsed.com.
The day of your child’s IQ test, please ensure they have breakfast or a meal beforehand and are hydrated. Feel welcome to bring a water bottle into the appointment but we cannot accommodate food/eating in the testing environment.
At the time of your appointment, please knock and the psychologist will welcome you at the door. The psychologist may have brief questions for the parent and will check in about pick-up and any other expectations at that time. The psychologist will welcome the student inside to begin the assessment.
At the end/after the appointment, please allow the time for us to prepare the report. Upon delivery, we will provide it to you via an encrypted link for your access.
The best and only way to prepare is making sure your child is well-rested, has had a healthy meal, and feels comfortable.
If you attempt to prepare by exposing them to practice materials/activities similar to the testing materials/activities, this will invalidate the results and you will still be charged in full for the appointment. To help the student understand more about the appointment, you can let them know that we will be doing lots of different “activities” that look at how they learn best (like looking at pictures, answering questions, and working with blocks). We recommend avoiding telling them that they will be playing “games” as they will quickly figure out that the activities we are doing are not games and may be disappointed. We also recommend avoiding using language like “IQ testing” or “testing” as this may make them unnecessarily nervous for the appointment. By maintaining the integrity of the testing process we can be confident the scores reflect your child’s abilities and can be used to make the best recommendations for their learning.
